There are probably a million cheeseburger recipes on the internet, why do we need one more?

Because every family needs their "House Cheeseburger" recipe: that essential grill-out dish you turn to again and again.

If you dine on my backyard patio, this is the hamburger recipe we're grilling for you.

My husband and kids have enjoyed this family burger recipe for as long as we've been making hamburgers! Enjoy a little taste from our home to yours.

Why This is the Best Recipe

Some recipes have become so ingrained in our family menu rotation that I simply forget to share them with you because they feel so basic.

But as my kids grow, I want to be sure that all our of our family's all-time favorites have been documented so they can enjoy these dishes on their own, too!

I think this is the best grilled cheeseburger recipe because:

  1. Lots of Flavor: We've been eating burgers this way for so long, I miss all the seasonings when we eat them plain at a restaurant.
  2. Easy to Prep: This is one of my husband's signature dishes. It is easy enough for him to make on his own.
  3. Nice and Juicy: The burger patties stay so juicy even if my husband accidentally grills them just a little too long. (Which almost never happens.)

Ingredients

The ingredients to make a classic hamburger are on the counter.

The best part about our recipe is that the ingredients don't require any chopping! All you need is:

  • Ground Beef: I buy 93% lean ground beef. Burger fanatics would disagree, but we like our burgers lean. You can use whatever you love.
  • Dijon Mustard
  • Worcestershire Sauce
  • Montreal Steak Seasoning

Prep the Burger Patties

First, place the ground beef in a large mixing bowl.

Sprinkle the Montreal steak seasoning over the top. Add the mustard and Worcestershire sauce.

Fluff the meat together with a fork, or just use your hands to gently combine the seasonings and beef.

The ground beef is in a mixing bowl topped with seasonings and mustard.

Pat the ground beef into a disc shape. Then use your hands or a fork to divide it into 4 equal portions.

Then divide each portion in half and pat it out into a burger patty.

The photo collage shows how to prep the burger patties.

Grilling Instructions

Preheat your grill to 450°F or medium-high. Once it comes to temperature, grill the burgers for 9 - 10 minutes flipping half way through cooking.

The burgers should register 150°F with an instant read thermometer.

Air Fryer Instructions

If you hit a rainy day, you can cook these burgers in your air fryer.

Preheat the air fryer to 400°F.

Add the burgers in a single layer with room around each one for air flow. Cook for 9 - 10 minutes, turning over halfway through.

The burgers should register 150°F with an instant read thermometer.

Best Burger Toppings

To turn our house burgers into cheeseburgers, we almost always use provolone cheese slices because it melts so well.

I like mine with sliced tomato and lettuce, sometimes a spoon of chow chow if I'm in the mood.

My oldest loves hers with more Dijon mustard over the top while my husband and youngest daughter love theirs with lots ketchup.

Sometimes we mix things up and brush them with bbq sauce for the last minute of grilling.

You could also prep ahead my caramelized onions or these quick pickled onions if you like onions on your burgers.

Its easy enough to turn them into bacon burgers with a batch of my peppered bacon, too.

Serving Suggestions

A grilled hamburger on a plate with potato chips.

When we serve cheeseburgers for dinner, they are often accompanied by chips and dip, watermelon, and corn on the cob.

Sometimes I'll set out a tub of cottage cheese, I actually love to dip my chips in it!

You could pair your burgers with baked french fries, tater tots, or potato salad, too. Want a lower carb option? Try these easy carrot fries next.

A fruit salad or green salad is a nice lighter option as well.

And if you have any leftover burger patties, don't miss my leftover cheeseburger salad for lunch the next day!

Our House Cheeseburgers

5 from 1 vote
If you're eating on our backyard patio, these are the cheeseburgers we're grilling up! Slightly seasoned with a hint of Dijon mustard in the patty keeps the beef burgers nice and juicy.
TOTAL TIME 25 minutes
PREP TIME 10 minutes
COOK TIME 15 minutes
YIELD 8 burgers

Ingredients

For the Burger Patties:

  • 2 pounds ground beef
  • 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard
  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon Montreal steak seasoning

For Serving:

  • 8 potato hamburger buns like Martin's sandwich rolls
  • Sliced provolone cheese optional
  • Shredded lettuce optional
  • Fresh tomato slices optional

Instructions

  • Place the ground beef in a large mixing bowl. Add the mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and Montreal steak seasoning. Gently combine the ingredients with two forks or your hands.
  • Divide the beef mixture into four equal portions. Pat them gently into patty shapes.

Grilling Instructions:

  • Preheat your grill so that it gets nice and hot before you try to cook the burgers. On our gas grill, we set the heat to about 450°F. Brush the grates to remove any residue from your last meal.
  • Grill the burgers for about 9 - 10 minutes for medium-well. Flip them over only once about half way through cooking. The burgers should register about 150°F with an instant read thermometer.

Air Fryer Instructions:

  • Preheat the air fryer to 400°F for 4 - 5 minutes.
  • Add the burgers in a single layer with room around each one for air flow. Cook for 9 - 10 minutes, turning over halfway through. The burgers should register 150°F with an instant read thermometer.

Assemble the Cheeseburgers:

  • If you want to add cheese to your burger, we enjoy adding the provolone right as the burgers come off the grill or out of the air fryer. Since it melts so well, the heat from the meat is just enough to soften it. However, you could also add sliced cheese on top of the burgers and then cover the grill for 30 seconds - 1 minute to melt the cheese or let the air fryer melt it for a minute. This is a great option if you choose to use American or cheddar cheeses instead of the provolone.
