My family absolutely loves potato bread and we seek out that particular flavor whenever we buy hamburger buns or prepared bread at the grocery store.

I just assumed this would be a tricky recipe to make in our bread machine, I couldn't imagine boiling potatoes before making bread. We use our bread machine for easy recipes I can prep quickly. I love good shortcuts that help me get dinner done fast.

So how do I make potato bread in the bread machine quickly on a busy day?? I use instant potato flakes instead of real hand-peeled and pre-cooked potatoes!

This simple shortcut means we can have homemade potato bread with just a minute of measuring and a press of a button.

Why This is the Best Recipe

  • Super Soft Texture: Potato flakes add moisture for a tender, fluffy loaf.
  • Easy Bread Machine Recipe: Just add the ingredients and let the machine do the work!
  • Perfect for Sandwiches: Holds up beautifully for slicing and toasting.

Ingredients

The ingredients to make potato bread in the bread maker are on the kitchen counter.

This simple ingredient list creates a delicious, homemade bread:

  • Instant Potato Flakes: You'll find this at the grocery store in a box near the packets of gravy mix or by the prepared packages of dried potatoes, rice, and pastas.
  • Buttermilk: In a pinch, you can substitute 1 cup milk with 1 tablespoon lemon juice or vinegar stirred in to equal 1 cup of buttermilk.
  • Bread Flour: You could use all-purpose flour if you don't have bread flour on hand but the loaf may not hold its shape as well.
  • Active Dry Yeast: You do not need yeast that is specifically labeled for bread machine use, active dry yeast works great.
  • Olive Oil
  • Honey
  • Kosher Salt

Bread Machine Tips

As the author of The Ultimate Bread Machine Cookbook, I'm very passionate about baking homemade bread with a bread maker.

If you're curious and wondering if a bread maker is worth it, not only do I think the answer is yes but I've reviewed the most popular bread machine for beginners.

For this recipe, I used my Cuisinart bread machine because I love how easy it makes preparing dough.

Add the Wet Ingredients

It is essential to load the bread machine pan with the ingredients in the exact order I have them listed in the recipe card to ensure that your dough mixes properly.

Start by adding the wet ingredients. If you measure the olive oil first, you'll find the honey slips right off the spoon into the pan.

Add the Dry Ingredients

Then add the dry ingredients on top.

Be extra careful that you add the flour first. Then add the potato flakes on top. Keep the potato flakes separate from the liquid until the machine mixes them together. Otherwise they'll immediately start to absorb the liquid and you'll have a big gummy mess that the machine struggles to knead together.

The bread maker will do all the rest of the work!

Make Ahead Tips

Storage: Store the cooled potato bread in an airtight bag at room temperature for up to 3 days.

Freezing: Slice the potato bread before freezing for quick use of just one piece at a time without having to thaw the entire loaf at once.

Reheating: Warm the bread in a toaster or oven at 300°F for a fresh-from-the-oven taste.

Variations

  • Herb & Garlic: Add dried rosemary, thyme, or garlic powder for extra flavor.
  • Cheesey Potato Bread: Mix in 1/2 cup of shredded cheddar for a cheesy twist.
  • Whole Wheat Version: Swap out 1 cup of bread flour for whole wheat flour.

Serving Suggestions

My family enjoys potato bread on soup night with a spread of softened butter over each slice. For an easy St. Patrick's Day dinner you could pair potato bread with this Irish potato soup!

On a chilly evening, potato bread pairs really well with tomato-based soups like my spicy sausage and lentil soup or this easy Instant Pot stuffed pepper soup.
